Can I Get That to Go? Designing for Mobile Devices
According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project survey, as of May 2013, 91% of American adults have a cell phone and 56% are smartphones. In addition, as of Sept. 2013, 35% of Americans 16 and older own a tablet computer (iPads, etc). The trend toward mobile usage to get on the Internet will continue to expand and your business will need to adapt.
Some tips to think about:
1) Speed is important.
Mobile users want information faster and download speeds are typically slower on phones as opposed to desktop computers. So make sure your site loads quickly by optimizing pictures, perhaps even removing them for mobile devices.
2) Shorter copy.
Because of the smaller screen size, text is lengthened so more scrolling is required. Keep the text shorter or give excerpts with a link to get more information if desired.
3) Use local SEO techniques.
One reason people use mobile devices is when they are out shopping or doing errands and want directions or information about stores on their route. Make sure your business is listed on Google Places for Business so people can find you.
